People have asked all sorts of questions about why we want to adopt. They have asked how we chose Ethiopia, how we chose N, why not adopt from America, these are all legitimate questions and I have tried to be very honest when I answer them.
I realize that not everyone thinks adoption is a good thing. For many years I had misgivings about it. I had known friends that had adopted, and I believed that God had placed those children in their homes. I could see his hand in the process. I knew that it was not an easy process, but God does not always give us the easy road. Often he does not give us the easy road. So I can understand why people question why we would desire to add to our family in this way. Just for the record, I believe God calls some to adopt-not all.
During this process I have "met" all kinds of amazing people through their blogs, as they share how God is working in their lives through this amazing grace of foreign adoption. A couple of days ago I read this post titled Selah, I still can't get that picture out of my head. That tiny little girl wrapping that baby up on her back. It captures her hope for her future, her desire to have a family, and her joy at having a family. She also had a post about her son and how his attitude has changed since they brought their daughter home. The bottom line was, that saving a child through adoption may mean a child that is already in your home. I have seen that in my family already.
We pray for N, we have pictures of him around our home. I had one child in particular that in her own words said "I feel bad for them, that they don't have families, but why do we have be their family?" Today she wants to go with us to Ethiopia to pick N up, I mean she really wants to go. My kids can point Ethiopia out on a map, they have eaten injera, they know why you shouldn't touch someone else's blood, they know how HIV is spread, they pray for children in Ethiopia by name. All of these things are a witness to me of how God brings His sons from afar.
By the way we are the afar, I live in Idaho for goodness sake. N is in Ethiopia, the land of the Queen of Sheba, they have been Christian for centuries before we were even a nation. We will join N's lineage, we will be his people, and his people will be ours. Glory be to you Lord Christ.
