Gone With The Wind

Our book group is reading Gone With The Wind. I am really enjoying it. It might just be me, but it seems to be an Americanized version of Vanity Fair. I might not have thought of it, except that Melanie and Ashley were overheard talking about William Thackeray in the beginning of the book. I like this book much better than Vanity Fair.

It was sort of daunting when I picked it up. But The Count of Monte Cristo just flew by, so I'm giving it a go. I am learning a bit about southern culture, which is fun. I'll have to venture down there sometime and visit some of my favorite southern ladies.

I'm trying to decide if I like Scarlett or not. I think she is just too much like me to be comfortable. I keep fighting the guilt of not being more ladylike. Although honestly I'm not sure what ladies look like exactly. I'm hoping by the end of the book I'll have a better idea. And I have to admit I have a soft spot for "bad" men. For some reason I feel sorry for them.

I just hope I finish it before I go to Ethiopia. Maybe that will be my opportunity to read Middlemarch.
