The House of Mirth

I finished my book group book for December. I'm a little ahead of myself, but I needed a good story. It is a really good story. I couldn't put it down. It was sort of torturous however. I spent the whole book wanting to smack Lily for being such a proud fool. It was an unsettling love story without a happy ending.

It made me realize how seductive material wealth is. When comfort becomes our chief end, the sacrifices that are made to achieve it make it impossible to attain. It was also disturbing to realize how vulnerable all women are regardless of time, place, and affluence. We are dependent on someone else to love and protect us, whether we want to admit it or not. It has made me think about how I raise my girls. What will they expect their lives to look like based on how we live. I want them to be able to take care of themselves in any situation, but I will pray more diligently for them to always have someone there to cover them.

I recommend the book. It is written by Edith Wharton.
