The Birthday cards have arrived. Every year my Dad sends the kids, who are potty trained, cards with a list of activities for them to choose from. The activities are things to do with Grandpa for the day. They can happen anytime during the year. The kids pick out what they want to do and then we call Grandpa and start scheduling. The kids look forward to these activities all year. In fact they usually pick their activity for the year, and then start thinking which one they want to do next year. My Dad's love language is obviously quality time. The kids have memories of these activities that last far longer than the gifts they have received.
They have had camping trips, ski trips, basketball games (Cougs of course), biking trips, train rides, movies, canoe trips, sometimes they get to take friends, sometimes it is just them. He is starting to think the big kids will get bored with these activities, they aren't, they love them more than the little kids. If you need great birthday gift ideas, try spending the day with the recipient instead.
