Home

We made it back home. The trip home seems to be harder than the trip over. Nes was great. He has been such a trooper through this transition. He is a very mild fusser, and is easily distracted. He slept a good portion of the flight. When he was awake he either walked to the bathroom, or played with the buttons on the arm of the chair. He kept pressing the button to page the stewardesses. After the first half a dozen times they quit checking on us. He also listened to the headphones for several hours. He actually traveled better than BK, I won't give any details, let's just say she wasn't very smiley. We all survived, and UB and Rachel picked us up at the airport and took care of us. I was really rummy yesterday, and was very thankful to be able to lie down and sleep.

Several people in the airport talked to Nes. He refused to speak Amharic to them. It is hard for me to understand why, I hate to see him give up his language so soon. One lady kept an eye on us for quite a while. She finally sat down next to me, and said she was really impressed by how much he liked me. It has only been a week and a half, so really it is impressive how quickly he is adjusting. I know we will have hard days, but it is nice to see him wanting a family. There was another man and his son who was Nes's age on the plane. He was the one who told me that Nes wouldn't speak Amharic to him. He said that he thought he would pick up English quickly and lose his Amharic. He seemed a little sad to see Nes leave Ethiopia, but was glad that we were interested in Ethiopia, and helping Nes keep that part of his life. The people that we talked to were very friendly. They were disturbed by the struggles that Ethiopia has, but hopeful that things are getting better. I see a lot of hope in Ethiopia, and a lot to be hopeful about.

I'll post a few pictures of Nes. I want to post more pictures of Ethiopia later.

Love the pics, especially the one of him in the sunglasses.

Teshe wouldn't speak Amharic either. He would speak it to us, but no Ethiopian people. I think it's a common thing for kids to do.

It is funny how children react to changes. A family here adopted a little Russian girl I think it has been 8 years now and she refused to speak Russian to anyone. She picked up English so fast it shocked me. She also used to say she is not Russian anymore but American. There is a lot that has been forgotten, but I think she partly wants it that way. She has forgotten almost all of her Russian as well.
I know you guys don't want Nes to forget, but just be prepared if he doesn't want anything to do with it.
I am glad you are back safely. He is adorable!

Wow, what a blessing you are already home. I can't believe how different Nes looks already, like a little man. I love the longer hair on him. I can't wait for the children to wake up in the morning so I can show them the pictures.
The way you described him on the plane is "exactly" how both of my kids acted, minus the Amharic.
Also you never know, Nes might be just cool like my kiddos, they have been home for almost 2 months and are still perfect. Not all children go through the terrible stage. There are a few how adjust normal.

Hurrah! I'm so happy!!! I've been thinking about you daily. He is so beautiful.

I know how heartbreaking it is when they give up their Amharic. We've had the same issue. I don't know what it is. I've learned to shurg my shoulders at my little American. :)
