The Vacation is Over

We drove back from the beach on Thursday. We got kind of a slow start, due to some stunning weather. It also happened to be Nes's birthday. He was disgruntled about the whole spending the birthday in the van deal, until we stopped at DQ and got him his very own Oreo blizzard.

Friday morning was the start of the Idaho State Gymnastics Meet. We were signed up to help out. I got a whole lotta of growling from my volunteers, so I took their job at the meet and left them with my to do list. They baked Nes's birthday cake, wrapped his presents and did laundry while I delivered balloons to gymnasts. When I got home Mads took the girls shopping, and the little kids played basketball at the park. It was amazing.

Saturday was Mads' first track meet. She did pretty well for her first meet of the year. We got her allergy tests back and found she doesn't seem to be allergic to mangoes. Not exactly sure what all of that means. I have discovered that exercise can induce more severe allergic reactions. So we are making sure she has her epi-pen when she goes to track, and that she does not eat for several hours before she runs. I'm telling you, allergies are really hard to pin down. We are doing a lot of cost/benefit analysis. Is it worth it to eat the food or not? That is something she has to decide for herself in many cases, but we are definitely being more cautious about food than we have been in the past.

Today Bronster competed in her first state gymnastics meet. She did very well for a rookie. We are still trying to figure out the whole gymnastics scene. Every sport has its own idiosyncrasies. We are still working through this one. I had a great chat with a mom that has been in it for several years. She had a very sensible approach that I think I will keep in mind when sizing up our commitment for next year. Keeping things reasonable for our family is always a challenge. There are so many great activities, but only so much time an money.

Tomorrow is the official back to school day. It has been a great break before a very busy spring.

So glad you had a good vacation. The story about the volunteers coming to your house just cracked me up. I can totally picture you doing that. Wished I had your attitude sometimes. RE: the gymnastics.. Glad you were able to talk to a mom that is seasoned because that is the exact reason why I am holding Amira back. I don't want someone telling me she is talented and suddenly we spent all our time and money at the gym. I can tell you long stories about competitive iceskating I did with Danica for 5 years:) But regardless, I am so glad you got your girls in gymnastics. Way better than iceskating.

Very good plan about the allergies. I type for an allergist and there is so much they don't understand, but not eating before exercise is good!
Love your blog and your amazing family!
