Sick Day

Saturdays are always a struggle for me.  Rick is usually home, which means that I start dreaming up to do lists for two.  Funny, he seems to have his own to do list going that not only does not have the same items on it that mine does, but often has a few items for me.  Now that we have nine underlings, they manage to slip things on to both of our to do lists as well.  All of this can create a very grumpy momma if I let it.  I am learning to hold my to do lists very loosely, and try to keep Saturdays open for spontaneous events.  This particular Saturday I am not feeling quite up to par, so I tried to keep my to do list minimal.  Rick had some things he was hoping to do, but when he got offered 4 tickets to the Vandal game those fell down the list at least five hours.

He did get the Netflix set up through our Wii for me, and got our humidifier out and working.  I am very happy to have those two items crossed off.  I have Doro Wat simmering away in the crock pot.  I'm trying to think of something to sop it up with since I didn't call for any injera this week, and I know Jubilee is not a rice fan.  I guess French bread will have to do.

I started to write a blog post about how the many conveniences around us are so seductive.  They seem to creep into our lives as luxuries and somehow convince us they are necessities.  I really do try to be thoughtful about how dependant I have become on my little devices that make my life easier.  I know there is a cost, and I want to keep that in mind.  I have been interrupted at least 25 times since I have started it, so I finally gave up.  I will have to ponder that when the children are at school, or at least outside.

I had also picked up my November issue of Better Homes and Gardens.  They suggested finding out what items your family really loves during the holidays and focusing on those, leaving out the rest.  I thought that was a fabulous idea.  I took a little poll around the house and found some interesting things.  My step mother made this amazing sweet potato casserole last year that was a huge hit.  When I find the recipe I will post it.  That will need to be on the Thanksgiving menu.  My Dad makes a jello salad that we all fondly refer to as "lungs" that everyone loves.  Think light pink and slightly foamy in texture.  I get my flare for telling it like it is from my Dad.  Interestingly the only dessert that came up was pumpkin pie, and only from one child.  Gravy came up more than once, I would never have guessed that.  It is always fun to find out what the family really loves about the holidays.  If I planned the meal based on what I love, everyone else might be a bit disappointed.  I'm glad that they overlapped as much as they did, otherwise I might have been making 10 side dishes anyway.

I also got a surprise call from one of Mads friends.  Lets just say she might have a very memorable spring break.  I think I am more excited than she is.  I am so glad that God has blessed my children with people around them that can help them do things that I could never help them do.  Thank You Lord for your abundant kindness to us.
