All White, And Waiting to Go

The weather this fall has been so lovely I guess I somehow forgot that we have winter here in Idaho.  We are still hopeful that the roads will open in time for us to meet our family for the holiday.  We woke up to a six inch blanket of white stuff covering my landscaping and making it look lovely.  The kids have been sledding off and on all day.  Martha discovered that she enjoys sledding MUCH more than ice skating.  I have to agree with her.

We spent a couple of hours ice skating in the afternoon yesterday.  I have to say that ice skating is NOT one of my favorite activities.  I don't love being cold, and when you fall it hurts.  Rick and I loaded up the van (I won't say how many people we loaded, let's just say we were the party) and headed for the rink.  As you can imagine it was a little bit chaotic when we arrived.  They had put skates out so that we wouldn't have to go and ask the attendant for each pair.  They flew off the shelf in about two minutes flat.  I was trying to keep Nectarine and Jalapeno under control, when another parent came up and said that Soren was down on the ice with a major head bonk.  Great!  Why was I letting my kids skate without helmets?  Well, because I was distracted with getting skates on eighteen moving people and they got to the ice before I could demand helmets.  We did get helmets on after Soren came back in.  He didn't do much skating after that, but he seems to be fine now.

Martha wisely refused to get out on the ice.  I can't say I blame her.  She was frozen after an hour of watching and was giving me the evil eye.  I finally got Rick to take her home, which improved her mood dramatically.  We ended up walking up the hill to our house since the van hasn't got its winter tires on yet.  Martha hit the hill today on the sled and liked that much better.  One day of skating was all I needed.  We are still nursing some bruises and sore muscles.

Today I have been cooking and packing.  I hope the weather breaks and lets us travel tomorrow.  I did get a sweet call around noon asking if I would like a deer that some friends had shot.  I had a brief moment of panic trying to fit it into my to do list.  Because the weather is so cold, I have some wiggle room.  And my  Dad said he would come down and help me.  I think our bags are almost packed.  It is hard to tell since the snow clothes keep going out the door on the kids.  Tracking down twenty two mittens will be the challenge.  I wish I could just hunker down and bake pies instead of pack all of my belongings into my van and drive for 4-5 hours.  I know the joy of being with my family will be worth it.  They have all called to check in, so I know they are excited too.  I am thankful for the hustle and bustle of the holiday.  Having all of this life around me is the best entertainment.
