"To discipline our desires is not only a personal imperative but also a political requirement, especially in democracies where the government is presumably "of the people, by the people and for the people." If the people lack self-control, however, then woe be to that democracy-it could become anarchy. As we note in singing "America the Beautiful," self-control is essential to the well-being of America and a key to its survival as a nation:
America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law."
